The Sholapith artist Arup Malakar hails from Kirnahar, a village near Shantiniketan. His father, the National Award-winning artist Ananta Malakar, pioneered Sholapith art in Kolkata in 1966. He has been practicing the art of sholapith since his childhood, having inherited it from his father. His artwork has been exhibited in several museums and galleries across India. He has also conducted workshops in schools and NGOs. "I enjoy conducting workshops in person, especially at schools," says Arup. The State Award he received in 2000 was one of his many awards.
