About the Artwork +

This vibrant and captivating Madhubani painting by Avinash Karn transports us to the festive season of Chhath Puja, immersing us in the vibrant tapestry of rural Indian life and its traditions. At the center of the painting, a radiant sun is prominently depicted, symbolizing Surya, the Sun God, who is honored during Chhath Puja. The railway station is alive with activity as people return to their hometowns to celebrate the festival. Vendors line the platform, selling traditional worship items and offerings essential for the puja.

The scene expands to show women preparing special dishes and prasad for the rituals, as others doing other rituals in preparation for the festival. Beyond the station, the landscape unfolds to reveal a panorama of rural life – Prople carrying baskets of offerings on their heads, villages dotting the horizon, and people engaged in worship, adding depth to the portrayal of community life. Groups of men and women stand knee-deep in the river, offering their prayers to the Sun God as part of the sacred ritual, their faces turned reverently towards the sun.

The artist's use of bold colors and intricate patterns brings vibrancy and life to each detail, from the bustling railway station to the serene riverside rituals. The dynamic composition captures the spirit of Chhath Puja, celebrating both the cultural heritage of the region and the devotion embedded in these timeless traditions. This Madhubani painting invites viewers to experience the energy, reverence, and community spirit of Chhath Puja, celebrating the beauty of simplicity and the enduring connection between humanity and nature.

Avinash Karn

Avinash Karn
Avinash Karn is a distinguished Madhubani artist from Ranti, Madhubani, Bihar, who began learning the traditional craft from his family at a young age, inspired by renowned artist Ganga Devi. As a third-generation Madhubani artist, he also holds a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts with a focus on sculpture from Banaras Hindu University. Karn has gained significant international recognition, including an invitation to the Fumetto Comic Festival in Switzerland, where his work was displayed at the Lucerne airport, and he conducted workshops and speaking engagements. He has also exhibited at prestigious venues like the Lalit Kala Academy and the Birla Academy, and received a scholarship from the Ministry of Culture, which facilitated various workshops. Notably, he contributed to a massive collaborative mural at Azeem Premji University in Bangalore. While maintaining traditional Madhubani styles, Karn explores contemporary subjects like cinema series and cityscapes, investing heavily in research to bring a fresh perspective and avoid common repetitions. Despite early financial struggles as a freelance artist, he leveraged social media to build his network. His ambition extends to preserving and promoting lesser-known Madhubani art forms such as Godna tattoos, Godna paintings, and low-relief paintings, with a goal to research and document their heritage through books.

Madhubani

Madhubani art, also known as Mithila art, originates from the Mithila region of Bihar, India, and is celebrated for its intricate patterns, vibrant colors, and profound cultural significance. Traditionally created by women on walls and floors during auspicious occasions, these paintings depict Hindu mythology, nature, folklore, and daily life, often incorporating Hindu deities, scenes from epics, and natural motifs like flowers and animals. Legend suggests its origins trace back to King Janak's commission for Sita's wedding. Artists traditionally use natural pigments from plants and minerals, applied with homemade bamboo and cotton brushes, filling the entire surface with fine detail. While some contemporary artists use synthetic paints, many maintain traditional methods. The art form gained international recognition in the 1960s and has since expanded to various mediums beyond walls, including canvases and textiles. Distinct styles like Kachni (line art), Bharni (filling art), Godna (tattoo art), Tantrik (spiritual), and Kohbar (marriage rituals) exist, each with unique characteristics. Madhubani art holds immense cultural, social, and religious importance, preserving stories, providing livelihood for women artists, and serving as a vibrant expression of India's rich heritage.
