About the Artwork +

Ashutosh Verma portrays a unique and striking masterpiece that brings a sense of elegance and depth to this traditional art form. At the centre of this artwork are cows, portrayed with remarkable attention to detail with the limitation of a single color. Their gentle presence is accentuated, and their significance as sacred animals is emphasized through this artistic choice. It is an artistic interpretation that sparks conversations about the multifaceted nature of art and symbolism, inviting viewers to explore the significance of colour in our perception of the natural world and its spiritual connections. This Sanjhi artwork is an invitation to engage with the intersection of art and tradition and to explore the limitless possibilities of creative reinterpretation.

Ashutosh Verma blue-tick

Welcome to the colorful world of Ashutosh, a sixth-generation artist hailing from Mathura's Verma community. His artistic journey commenced at the tender age of five, immersing himself in the enchanting folk art of Sanjhi. This timeless tradition finds its roots with Ashutosh's great-grandfather, Shri Chain Shuk Das Verma, who embarked on his own Sanjhi odyssey nearly three centuries ago, passing it down through generations. Ashutosh's devotion to this art spans 15 years, and his family's prowess has garnered both State and National acclaim for their Sanjhi creations. Remarkably, at the age of 20, Ashutosh is now reaching for a State Award category of his own. Collaborating closely with his father, they form a dynamic duo, crafting exquisite works that blend tradition and innovation, painting a vivid portrait of Mathura's artistic heritage.

Sanjhi

The delicate art of papercutting said to have originated from the times of Lord Krishna has evolved over time from the sanctum of the temple to modern home décor – this is Sanjhi. A rare art from Braj. The word Sanjhi means evening or dusk and is more an expression of the devotional love that was unveiled in the temples. It is said to have originated at the time of Lord Krishna when Radha used to create beautiful patterns out of leaves and flowers creating decorations for Krishna. The story goes that following Radha, other Gopis too indulged in the art to impress the lord. Consequently, the art grew in the 16th and 17th centuries when the walls and floors of temples were decorated with Sanjhi.
