Dinesh Molela creates the image of Durga in this handmade Terracotta wall art. The artist illustrates Durga riding her Tiger, which indicates that she beholds unlimited power. The Tiger represents uncontrolled animalistic tendencies like anger, arrogance, greed, jealousy, selfishness, etc. Her sitting on it is a reminder to control these tendencies and not let them control us.

    Dinesh Molela

    Mohan Lal Kumhar was awarded the Padma Shri for Molela Terracotta. Dinesh Chandra Mohanlal Kumhar's art is in several national and international collections. He's also been to several foreign countries to demonstrate his abilities and promote his items. Both are excellent instances of how dedication and hard effort pay off! Dinesh Chandra Kumhar's family has been manufacturing molela terracotta art plaques depicting traditional Hindu deities for fifteen generations. Dinesh began his apprenticeship at the age of ten, under the supervision of his father.  For fifteen generations Dinesh ji's family have practised the tradition of making terracotta plaques of traditional Hindu Deities. Molela is known in the area as a 'potters village' as there are about 30 families from the Kumhar caste producing pottery.

    Teracotta art has been practised in India for thousands of years, dating back to the Indus Valley civilization. Clay is used to make earthenware, figurines, and other ornamental items. Clay is dried and then fried at extremely high temperatures to allow it to take shape. The artform also has a spiritual importance, as it is claimed in Hinduism that this material uses the five components of the universe: air, water, fire, ether, and earth. States including as Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, and Rajasthan have a long and illustrious history with the art form.
