About the Artwork +

Renowned artist Vasant Manubhai Chitara in his Mata Ni Pachedi artwork depicts an off-white fish with intricate patterns and designs, with a goddess on her fins, against a red background. The presence of a fish in this artwork may symbolize the abundance and prosperity that the goddess brings to the devotees as it is a significant symbol in Hindu mythology, representing fertility, abundance, and life. The intricate patterns and designs on the fish signify the artistic skill and attention to detail of the artist. The presence of a goddess on the fish's fins suggests a divine connection with the fish. The goddess represents a guardian or protector, guiding the fish and, by extension, the devotees who rely on the symbolism of the fish for blessings and protection. The off-white color underscores the goddess's role in bringing purity, prosperity, and spiritual blessings to the devotees. The red background highlights the goddess's powerful and auspicious presence.

Mata Ni Pachedi

Mata-ni-Pachedi is a traditional art of painting the image of goddesses on a piece of fabric found in the temple that is colourful animated pictures of gods and goddesses, devotees and followers, flora and wildlife with a narrative theme. Mata-ni-Pachedi comes from the Gujarati language, where Mata means "goddess," ni means "belongs to," and Pachedi means "behind." When the nomadic Vaghari population of Gujarat was forbidden from attending temples, they created their own shrines on cloth with representations of the Mother Goddess in various shapes. The product layout of four to five pieces of Mata-ni-Pachedi built to make a shrine for the Mother Goddess is the distinctive feature of this temple-hanging.
