About the Artwork +

Anjali Vakil portrays the essence of devotion and adoration for Lord Ganesha. In the centre of the painting, a resplendent image of Lord Ganesha takes prominence. He sits majestically, surrounded by a serene pond, which reflects his divine presence. His vahana, a little mouse, scampers playfully by the water's edge, a charming testament to the artist's attention to detail. To the left of Lord Ganesha, a woman with hands folded in devotion offers a plate of delectable sweets, a gesture of profound devotion. On the right side of the painting, another woman elegantly waves a fan made of delicate and colourful feathers. This gesture signifies the devotee's dedication to providing comfort to the divine presence, creating a serene and tranquil environment for Lord Ganesha. Surrounding the entire composition is a meticulously crafted border of delicate flowers. These floral motifs, with their intricate patterns and vivid colours, provide a sense of completeness to the artwork, and they add a touch of elegance to the overall composition. The artist's meticulous attention to detail and her skillful use of vibrant colours make this painting a true visual feast, capturing the essence of devotion and celebration of Lord Ganesha in the most enchanting way.

Anjali Vakil blue-tick

Join the enchanting world of Anjali Vakil, a Chamba Rumal artist who embarked on her artistic journey after marriage, stepping into a lineage of creative brilliance. Her mother-in-law, the esteemed Lalita Vakil, earned the prestigious 1993 National Award for Chamba Rumal embroidery, setting the stage for Anjali's own creative odyssey. Enthralled by her in-laws' work and the artistry of Chamba Rumal, Anjali decided to dive in. In 2018, her dedication and talent were recognized with a National Award for her outstanding contributions to Chamba Rumal embroidery. Anjali's story unfolds as a delightful fusion of love, art, and tradition. Since her marriage in 2006, she's not only mastered Chamba handkerchief embroidery but expanded its horizons, adding her unique touch to designs that now grace panels, dupattas, shawls, and sarees. Join her on a colorful adventure where family tradition meets innovation, and every stitch tells a story waiting to enchant your senses.

Chamba Rumaal

The Chamba Rumal, a splendid embroidered artistry, once nurtured under the benevolent patronage of Chamba's former rulers, graces occasions like weddings with its intricate motifs in a delightful array of colors. Its earliest incarnation, as crafted by Bebe Nanaki, Guru Nanak's sister in the 16th century, is lovingly preserved in Hoshiarpur's Gurudwara. These handkerchiefs take shape in square and rectangular geometries, woven with fine silks from Punjab and Bengal, and adorned with highly ornate patterns created with untwined silk threads from Sialkot, Amritsar, and Ludhiana. The unique dohara tanka or double satin stitch embroidery technique, borrowed from Kashmir and enriched with Mughal themes inspired by Chamba miniature paintings, brings forth mirror-like designs visible even from a distance.
