About the Artwork +

Jayesh Sharma portrays a captivating artwork that transports the viewers to the auspicious occasion of Gopashtami, a celebration of Lord Krishna's divine connection with the sacred cows of Vrindavan. At the very heart of the composition stands Lord Shrinathji, his divine form adorned in vibrant hues of yellow, symbolising the auspiciousness of the occasion. In his hands, he holds his iconic flute, poised to produce enchanting melodies. Surrounding Shrinathji, a congregation of white cows gathers, their gentle presence representing the sacred bond between Lord Krishna and the revered cows of Vrindavan. They stand with grace, their pure white coats contrasting beautifully with the lush greenery of the banana groves. The background of the painting is adorned with thriving banana trees, their presence symbolising the abundance of nature's blessings in Lord Krishna's presence. High above the divine tableau, celestial beings known as devas watch from the sky, their presence underscoring the sacredness of the moment. The border of the painting is intricately adorned with various motifs of Shrinathji, each telling a different facet of his divine story. The artwork is a visual symphony of colours and devotion, capturing the essence of Gopashtami and the sacred connection between Lord Krishna and the cows of Vrindavan.

Jayesh Sharma ji, who resides in Nathdwara, Rajasthan, has been a Pichwai artist for more than 38 years, and his family has been practising this art for 400 years as well, with 9 generations of his family being Pichwai painters and linked with the temple in Nathdwara. He is currently teaching his children to carry on the family legacy. He enjoys experimenting with his paintings while keeping the beliefs and tale untouched. He considers his profession to be a commitment and as a responsibility towards soceity. One of his favourite themes is the Annakut festivities. His grandfather's Gangaramji Sharma's art was on exhibit at Mumbai's Bhuleshwar temple. His paintings can be seen in the Shrinathji temple in Nathdwara and Udaipur, the Badrinath temple in Manasa, Madhya Pradesh, the Dakor temple in Gujarat, and the Bada Mandir Haveli in Mumbai. Indra Daman Goswami ji has awarded him a Prasashti Patra for his services to the Lord's Wall at Nathdwara. He clearly embodies the adage, "Allow your passion to become your mission, and it will one day become your vocation."

Pichwai Art

The art of Pichwai originated over 400 years ago, illustrating tales of Shrinathji, an incarnation of Krishna, the deity manifest as a seven-year-old child. Prominent in th Nathadwara region of Rajasthan especially in the Vaishnavite sect, the paintings are hand-painted on cloth or paper and depict different scenes and stills - lotuses, Radha, Gopis and cows are also frequent subjects. What started as a religious practice, is an art today and finds place in the form of paintings and wall hangings in homes of many art connoisseurs.
