About the Artwork +

Tikuli painting artist Ashok Kumar depicts half Buddha representing balance between opposing forces or ideas, for instance as materialism and spirituality, enlightenment and ignorance, or the earthly and the divine, aiming to convey the idea of finding equilibrium and inner peace in a fragmented or chaotic world. The half Buddha is a reminder of the significance of meditation practice in Buddhism, encouraging viewers to contemplate their own spiritual journeys and the importance of mindfulness. Moreover, it represents a specific moment in the life of Siddhartha Gautama depicting him during his deep meditation just before attaining enlightenment, emphasizing the importance of inner peace, meditation, and spiritual realization.

Artist

Tikuli

Tikuli, an unusual art style, is said to be over 800 years old. Tikuli originated in Patna, Bihar. Hand painting in this manner entails moulding glass into sheets and adorning and creating on them. The upper class is reported to have embellished them with gold and diamonds as a status signal. This artform is now done on hardboard plates and involves 15 phases, although it is still practised by individuals like the Santhal tribe of Bihar and volumes of Hindi literature.
