About the Artwork +

Manoranjan Chitrakar portrays a celebration of the goddess's power and her fierce form as she vanquishes the demon Mahishasura. Goddess Durga, with her multiple hands, stands in an imposing stance, draped in a resplendent red saree. In one of her many hands, she wields her trident with unshakable determination, piercing the heart of the vanquished Mahishasura, who lies defeated at her feet. Beside her, her lion, the symbol of her regal grace and fierce protection, exudes majesty and power. Against the radiant backdrop of a vibrant yellow, Goddess Durga's divine triumph shines brightly. Surrounding Goddess Durga are other deities, each a manifestation of divine grace and strength. Saraswathi, the goddess of wisdom and knowledge, sits with her veena, symbolising art and learning. Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, graces the scene with her benevolence. Lord Ganesh, the remover of obstacles, and Karthikeyan, the warrior god, stand by her side. They represent the collective strength of the divine realm, united in their reverence for Durga's valor. The artwork celebrates the triumph of good over evil and serves as a timeless testament to the enduring power of the divine.

Manoranjan Chitrakar blue-tick

"In West Bengal, the word chitrakar refers to pattachitra painters. We have taken Chitrakar as our last name for hundreds of years" says Manoranjan aka Manu Chitrakar, who has been painting for 30 years since the age of 15. He enjoys depicting societal themes in his works. Manuji has travelled across India, as well as to Sweden and Paris. The Bengal Pattachitra is a visual and oral art tradition practised by West Bengal's Patuas or Chitrakars. Patua painters, who are Muslim by faith, represent a distinct and secular art history. They make a living by painting and singing stories from Hindu mythology, local folklore, Sufi tradition, and modern issues. Though the origins of the Patua tradition have been difficult for art historians to trace, some suggest the oral form dates back to the 10th or 11th century CE. The physical evidence of a scroll, on the other hand, does not occur until the 18th century CE.
