About the Artwork +

Purusottam Swain's evocative saura painting captures the essence of rural life in a vibrant and celebratory tableau. This circular gathering of people exudes an air of jubilation and camaraderie as the community has come together to celebrate an occasion of significance. Swain's artistic finesse is evident in the arrangement, with each figure contributing to the sense of unity and harmony. To the left, a beautifully adorned hut stands as a hub of festivities. Inside, jubilant figures engage in dance and merriment, enveloped by the exuberance of the occasion. On the right, a similarly adorned door beckons attention, hinting at another facet of the celebration. The animals' presence adds to the tapestry of daily existence, amplifying the authenticity of the scene and grounding it in the rhythms of the countryside. Swain's choice of colours infuses the painting with vibrancy and vivacity, echoing the exuberance of the celebration. In this Saura masterpiece, Purusottam Swain masterfully encapsulates the essence of rural festivities and communal togetherness.

    Artist

    Purusottam

    Purusottam Swain blue-tick

Hailing from the village of Raghurajpur (the heritage village of Pattachitra artists), Purusottam Swain is a young 26 year old generational Pattachitra artist who has been painting for the last 40 years since he was in the 4th standard. He has learnt from his father who was also a Pattachitra artist. His work is coveted by patrons across the world, he has received a certificate of appreciation by the Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath and been a part of many events like the Bharat Lok Parv.

The name Pattachitra has evolved from the Sanskrit words patta, meaning canvas, and chitra, meaning picture. Originally from Odisha, Pattachitra is thus a painting done on canvas, and is manifested by rich colourful application, creative motifs and designs, and portrayal of simple themes, mostly mythological in depiction. More than anything, the themes are clearly the essence of the art form, conceptualising the meaning of the paintings.

    Saura Art

The art-form of Odisha's Saura tribe has hundreds of years of history. Saura, also known as Ikon, are paintings that date back to the epic period of Mahabharata and Ramayana. They are mostly done on red or brown clay walls that were originally inhabited by the Saura people and employ natural colours created from grains, flowers, and other natural materials. These paintings have carried the Saura people's history with them. Not only are these detailed and beautiful images a method for the tribe to describe and document their life, but they also have religious and spiritual importance for the community. In current times, the art form has been adopted to adorn clothes such as sarees and has found an overall decorative approach.
