About the Artwork +

In this Tanjore painting, Sanjay Tandekar paints Goddess Annapurna- the Hindu Goddess of food and nourishment. Worship and offering of food are highly praised in Hinduism, and therefore, the Goddess Annapurna is regarded as a popular deity. She is a manifestation of the Goddess Parvati, the wife of Shiva, and is eulogised in the Annada Mangal, a narrative poem in Bengali by Bharatchandra Ray. The Agamas (religious texts) describe the iconography of Annapoorna as a youthful goddess having a red complexion a face round like the full moon, three eyes, high breasts, and four hands. The lower left hand is depicted as holding a vessel full of delicious porridge. The right hand with a golden spoon adorned with various jewels. The other two hands depict the Abhaya and Varada poses. She is depicted with wristlets and gold jewellery on her chest. She is seated on a throne with the crescent moon adorning her head. A few temples exist that are dedicated to her, the most prominent being the Annapurna Devi Mandir in Varanasi. Since Akshaya Tritiya is considered to be the birthdate of the Goddess Annapurna, the day is believed to be very auspicious for buying gold jewellery.

Sanjay Tandekar

Sanjay Tandekar has been a painter for the past 15 years. He got his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Fine Arts from Nagpur. He had always had a strong interest in traditional arts, and he was especially eager in learning Tanjore painting. He is a self-taught Tanjore artist who learnt Tanjore painting by meticulously analysing the nuances of the art form. His wife and father are now also interested in this magnificent art form with him. He has received several medals and accolades for his proficiency in Tanjore and other arts, including a Gold Medal at the 2017 National Art Exhibition in Punjab.

Tanjore art, also known as Thanjavur art or Tanjore painting is A Classical South Indian Art Developed In The Late 16th Century In Thanjavur Also Known As Tanjore In Tamilnadu South Indian State. These Tanjore Paintings Evoke A Sense Of Class And Timelessness With Their Alluring Illustrations Of Puranic Scenes. This Ancient Art Form Traces Its Origin To Tanjavur, Capital Of The Erstwhile Chola Empire.  The paintings are characterized by their vibrant colors, intricate details, and the use of gold leaf and precious stones. The paintings depict Hindu gods and goddesses, and religious themes, and are typically done on a piece of cloth or canvas pasted over a wooden board. The base of the painting is typically made from a mixture of limestone paste, sawdust, and tamarind seed, which is then polished to give the painting a smooth finish. The main feature of the paintings is the use of gold leaf, which is applied to the painting using a technique called "gesso work". The gold leaf is applied in thin sheets and then burnished to create a shining effect. The painting is further embellished with the use of precious and semi-precious stones, glass beads, and sometimes even pearls.
