Historically used to narrate stories from the Ramayana and Mahabharata through night-long performances, the art involves crafting translucent puppets from goat or deer leather, which are carved, perforated, and hand-painted with mineral colours before being brought to life behind an illuminated screen.

Each small conical shade is hand-painted with repeating patterns of flowers, leaves, and vines in warm reds, yellows, greens, and golds, while the leather's natural translucency lets the bulb's glow shine softly through the painted surface and illuminate the floral detailing from within. Strung one after another along a simple length of wire, the lights climb vertically along a wall or doorway, each individually patterned shade catching a slightly different quality of light depending on its colour and density of painted detail.

Rooted in the same leather-crafting technique traditionally used to make shadow puppets, this piece repurposes Tholu Bommalata's hand-painted, light-permeable leatherwork for a festive, functional form, bringing a centuries-old craft practice into the context of contemporary Diwali decor.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1194/1498/files/1._Diwali_String_Lights_with_Floral_Motifs_in_Tholu_Bommalata_by_Sindhe_Siva.jpg?v=1791784266
https://www.memeraki.com/products/diwali-string-lights-with-floral-motifs-in-tholu-bommalata-by-sindhe-siva
