domestic-life-in-chamba-rumal-by-anjali-vakil
Day in the Life of Radha-Krishna

This precisely woven Chamba Rumal by the talented artisan, Anjali Vakil depicts Radha Krishna sitting under an architectural pavilion, surrounded by other figurative characters showcasing the domestic lives of Chamba.

Originating in the region of Chamba, Himachal Pradesh, this embroidery style was popularised in the 18th and 19th centuries. As the name suggests, this craft is done on a rumal, meaning a ‘handkerchief’. The rumal is embroidered with pictorial painting, intricate double-sided weaving (do-rukha tanka), and exquisite designs and patterns.

At the center of the square-shaped fabric, a marble-impacted architectural setting is woven, where Lord Krishna and Radha are sitting and embracing each other’s presence. Their pictorial presence represents their leisure time. Lord Krishna is shown dark-complexioned, holding a lotus bud in his left hand, suggestive of love, wearing a peacock-feather crown and embellished with full-sleeve garments, while Radha is fair-complexioned, wearing patterned clothing. The full-sleeved clothing represents the chilly weather of the Chamba region.

Flanking the architectural setting, to Krishna’s side, his three sakhas are shown standing, bejewelled and in heavy clothing, holding significant flower buds and a peacock feather, each one of them. On Radha’s side, her two sakhis appear in a standing position, attired in striped, patterned clothing. One is holding a chauri (whisk) and a lotus petal in her hands. The other is holding a fan and a tray full of ladoos.

Apart from their divine presence, the fabric is woven with pictorial depictions of women shown busy performing their daily household chores or some enjoying their leisure time. Such themes reflect the representation of the lives of domestic women, which further strengthens their connection to the craft. The representations showcase women enjoying swing, hand-feeding a peacock, engaged conversations, feeding a deer, playing chausar (a traditional Indian board game), etc. The space is filled with the delineation of trees blossoming with different kinds of flowers like Guler, Datura, and others, celebrating the flora of Chamba.

With minimalist weaving technique and stylistic characteristics, the rumal creates an animated and lively scene through the use of subtle silk thread. The composition is enclosed with a broader frame adorned with curving floral patterns.
