“When the Last Tree Is Cut Down, the Last Fish Eaten, and the Last Stream Poisoned, You Will Realize That You Cannot Eat Money.”

~ An ancient native American proverb

Aptly, fish are a symbol of wealth and abundance and tortoise/turtle represent vitality and good luck in the vibrant Madhubani paintings of Bihar, India. The existence of these animals mean that all the elements of nature are in harmony, and thus there is prosperity.

The paintings of Madhubani are legendary narratives to which the folk turn to pray in daily ritual as part of marriage ceremonies or at religious occasions. Madhubani painting evolved from a traditional practice of wall art to contemporary iterations on canvas and fabric. This range of co-ordinated masks with stoles is a limited edition capsule collection 'Jiyo for MeMeraki' , handpainted by artist Narmada and created by Jiyo's Madhubani painting cluster Shilp Sangha, a cooperative located in Ranti village in the Mithila district of Bihar.
