Its hallmark is the layering of cut fabric in contrasting colours and patterns, and traditional motifs include flowers, trees, peacocks, elephants and birds. In this contemporary piece, the vocabulary of the craft is turned to a quiet, airborne subject.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe birds are spread across the ivory ground in six different postures, each caught at its own moment of flight. One at upper left glides with an orange neck and wings of green, maroon and black. Another at upper right curves its long, pale neck back as it descends, its wings in maroon, mustard and olive. A long-necked bird in olive green stretches toward the left at the centre, while another at lower left carries a maroon neck and wings of green and cream. At the right, a pale-necked bird flies low with wings of black, green and maroon, and at the bottom centre, a bird with a deep brown head sweeps downward, its tail and breast flaring in a bold orange patch. Every body and wing is pieced from tiny scraps of floral, paisley and batik fabric, so each duck carries a different pattern in its feathers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe palette is warm and autumnal, with orange, mustard, olive, maroon and cream set against the pale field. The generous space between the birds lets each one breathe, and the whole flock moves together without crowding.
