The term ‘Pichwai’ refers to intricate paintings originally executed on cloth, which are traditionally hung on the back walls of temples. These beautifully detailed textiles serve a sacred purpose, created to adorn the shrines of Lord Shrinathji, a seven-year-old manifestation of Lord Krishna.

The circular composition portrays the depiction of a cow, or Gaiya, in a realistic manner. While its body is frontal, its head is turned against its body. The cow is adorned with ornaments like two layers of bell chains and tassels attached to the sides of her horns, though her horns are covered with horn-caps. Her head is covered with a piece of cloth with a moorpankh (peacock feather) in between, resembling the presence of Lord Krishna. Her body is adorned with saffron handprints, signifying the divine protection of Shrinathji. Cows represent absolute devotion, abundance, and unconditional love. Her contours are highlighted with a tinge of orange, resembling her significance.

The composition of the plate is occupied by the rendition of lotus buds as the backdrop, symbolizing purity, prosperity, and good luck. They are placed in a circular motion. Delicately painted with a tinge of pink hues and a green, slender, and tender stem. They are set against a warm yellow painted background.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1194/1498/files/1._Gaiya_with_Kamal_Talai_in_Pichwai_Plates_by_Dinesh_Soni.jpg?v=1791794235
