The word ‘Phad’ refers to a long painted cloth or a scroll that depicts a story through a series of images. This narrative painting is carried by a Bhopa (a storyteller) who would sing and narrate the story depicted on the scroll. Traditionally, these Phad were created to narrate the depiction of local folk deities and heroic figures of Rajasthan.

Lord Ganesha is depicted seated on a majestic lion, his mount, which signifies the defeat of the demon of jealousy and envy, Matsarasura. The narration is recorded in the Mudgala Purana. The lion is shown in motion, resembling strength and power. As a four-armed deity, his upper right hand holds a tray full of modak (his favourite sweet), symbolizing the rewards of spiritual devotion and wisdom, while his upper left holds Parashu (Battle axe), symbolising the destruction of illusion and evil spirits. His lower right grasps a pasha (noose) to restrain worldly attachments, and his lower left hand is free of any attributive icon. The deity's expression is marked by almond-shaped eyes and a gracefully curving trunk, projecting innocence and inner peace. He is adorned with a tiered conical crown, denoting his sovereign status, alongside intricately carved necklaces, armlets, and anklets. His head is coloured red, reflecting his divine energy and presence. His body is supported by a halo adorning the back of his head.

To the upper and lower sides of the composition, a Devanagari script is inscribed, narrating the story.

The composition of Lord Ganesha is set against an elemental backdrop, presenting nature and geometric motifs, with a pair of figures flanking him.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1194/1498/files/1._Ganpati_with_Simha_in_Phad_by_Abhishek_Joshi.jpg?v=1793088043
