It depicts the festival of Gopashtami, celebrating the occasion when Krishna was promoted from tending young calves to fully-grown cows.

The painting is rendered in the traditional Pichwai style, a celebrated artform originating from Rajasthan, with its roots deeply entrenched in the Nathdwara region. The term ‘Pichwai’ refers to intricate paintings traditionally hung on the back walls of temples. These beautifully detailed textiles serve a sacred purpose, created to adorn the shrines of Lord Shrinathji, a seven-year-old manifestation of Lord Krishna.

At the centre of this rendition is Shrinathji, standing in his iconic Govardhan-dhari posture, dressed in red garments as he plays the flute. He is adorned in pearl and gemstone jewellery along with flower garlands. His look is further enhanced by the signature peacock feather headdress and diamond nosering and chin ornament, as a bhamandal surrounds him.

The cows, rendered in white, are adorned with saffron handprints on their heads, bodies, and feet and gold and silver ornaments. The prints on the head and body signify the divine protection of Shrinathji, and the prints on the feet signify celebration. They are each wearing gold and silver headdresses with peacock feathers on them, dressed up for the occasion.

The fruit and flowering trees of the Nandvan background highlight the divine and ethereal nature of the scene. The artist has chosen a muted palette with monochromes for this composition, with Shrinathji as his only coloured element, highlighting his leelas perfectly.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1194/1498/files/1._Shrinathji_as_Gopala_in_Pichwai_by_Jayesh_Sharma.png?v=1790160546
