Through a grid of individually designed cells, the piece captures the technical brilliance and nomadic heritage of the Jat community of Kutch.

Jat Daneta is one of the major embroidery styles practiced by specific subgroups of the Kutchi Jat community. Traditionally worked on the yokes of garments, it is defined by its solid, sturdy appearance and intensely textured surface. Geometric and abstract motifs are built upon a foundational grid, and the style is recognised by a tiny mirror set at the centre of each motif and by structured lines that radiate within the designs. The stitching is so dense that the base cloth does not show through, and the tension of the thousands of interlocking stitches keeps the panel lying perfectly flat.

The central field is divided into a dense grid of small square cells set against a deep maroon ground, each separated from its neighbours by fine red lines. Every cell holds its own motif. Some are circles with concentric rings, others are crosses, four-petalled flowers, octagons, diamonds or radiating stars, and many carry a tiny mirror at the centre. The repetition of the grid gives a strong sense of order, while the variety of motifs rewards slow, close looking, a sampler of the whole geometric vocabulary of the tradition.

The palette is rich and earthy. Purple, olive green, teal, gold and cream motifs sit against the maroon ground, with white touches from the mirrors and highlight stitches brightening each cell.

The grid is enclosed by a series of bordering bands. Across the top and bottom, diagonal-striped panels flank central bands of chequered blocks and chains of gold rings, while along the sides, columns of triangles and linked circles run vertically. Round mirrored medallions mark the corners. The entire embroidery is edged in salmon pink and mounted on a deep blue fabric.

Material: Dupion Silk

Design Facilitation & Production Co-ordination By: Shrujan Team

Techniques & Artists: Jat Dhaneta Hand Embroidery: Nurbanu Ramjan Jat
