True to his character as protector, he is shown drawing his bow, an arrow nocked and ready, his stance poised and alert.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn the Ramayana, Lakshmana accompanies Rama and Sita into fourteen years of forest exile entirely of his own will, forgoing the comforts of the palace to serve and protect his elder brother. His devotion is tested repeatedly, most famously in the episode of the Lakshmana Rekha, the protective boundary he draws around the hermitage before departing to search for Rama, lured away by Maricha's cry for help.
