The term ‘Pichwai’ refers to intricate paintings originally executed on cloth, which are traditionally hung on the back walls of temples. These beautifully detailed textiles serve a sacred purpose, created to adorn the shrines of Lord Shrinathji, a seven-year-old manifestation of Lord Krishna.

Composed in the circular form of a Pichwai plate, the image of Lord Shrinathji is enclosed within a rectangular frame, framing his idol. He is rendered in a sampada position. He is depicted gesturing with his left hand raised, holding Mount Govardhana, symbolic of saving the lives of his Brajwasi. The other hand holds a flute (murali) and a stem of a lotus bud (kamalchadi). He is shown dark-complexioned and is oval-shaped, with lotus-shaped eyes (kamalnayan), a slender nose (adorned with a pearl nath), and protruding lips with a diamond on his chin. His forehead is adorned with the Vaishnava tilak of Chandan and Roli. His head is adorned with a heavily embellished crown and a peacock feather (mormukuta) at its top.

He is embellished with an abundance of jewellery: strings of pearls, emeralds, rubies and gold. Around his neck, he wears a heavy garland of closed lotus buds, and another set of garlands filled with distinct flower petals and leaves interspersed between. He is attired in a saffron coloured garment with a yellow-embellished border, and motifs occupied the fabric, while a blue coloured dupatta is draped across his arms. He is positioned on a low pedestal and a prasaddibbi, paan and a jaldaani are kept for use during his sewa. The lower end of the frame is adorned with enlarged circular-shaped pillows and bordered with golden, square-shaped geometric patterns with stones embedded in between.

The painting of Shrinathji is set against a solid red colour background, with floriated lotus petals and buds. The base of the plate is rendered with three consecutive lotus flowers symbolizing harmony and balance to the overall composition.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1194/1498/files/1._Lord_Shrinathji_and_the_Kamal_Talai_in_Pichwai_Plates_by_Dinesh_Soni.jpg?v=1791794698
https://www.memeraki.com/products/lord-shrinathji-and-the-kamal-talai-in-pichwai-plates-by-dinesh-soni
