The term ‘Pichwai’ refers to intricate paintings originally executed on cloth, which are traditionally hung on the back walls of temples. These beautifully detailed textiles serve a sacred purpose, created to adorn the shrines of Lord Shrinathji, a seven-year-old manifestation of Lord Krishna.

The central composition of the plate is dominated by the image of Lord Shrinathji, enclosed under a rectangular frame. He is rendered in a sampada position, depicted gesturing with his left hand raised, holding Mount Govardhana, symbolic of saving the lives of his Brajwasi against the wrath of Lord Indra. The other hand holds a flute (murali) and a stem of a lotus bud (kamalchadi). He is shown dark-complexioned and is oval-shaped, with lotus-shaped eyes (kamalnayan), a slender nose (adorned with a pearl nath), and protruding lips with a diamond on his chin. His forehead is adorned with the Vaishnava tilak of Chandan and Roli. His head is adorned with a heavily embellished crown and a peacock feather (mormukuta) at its top.

He is embellished with an abundance of jewellery: strings of pearls, emeralds, rubies, and gold, along with earrings, armbands, wristbands, anklets, toe rings, rings, palm ornaments, and more. Around his neck, he is attired in a set of garlands of lotuses and other flowers. He is attired in a saffron coloured garment with a yellow-embellished border, and motifs occupy the fabric, along with a blue coloured dupatta crossing his arms. He is positioned on a low pedestal and a prasaddibbi, paan and a jaldaani are kept for use during his sewa. The rectangular frame is bordered with a four-petalled flower delineated in a repetitive rhythm with a monochromatic tone. At the top of the frame, at the extreme ends, a pair of embellished lamps (diya) are rendered in black with white dots.
The composition of Lord Shrinathji is framed with the depiction of a lotus pond (Kamal Talai); the buds are blooming in rhythm, spreading all across the surface. Their implied texture can be felt. These buds are accompanied by their leaves, extending their fans delicately with fine contours. The artist has used the colour palette with precision, playing with contrast and shadow.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1194/1498/files/1._Lord_Shrinathji_Manifestation_in_Pichwai_Plates_by_Dinesh_Soni.jpg?v=1791795223
