Made from Kumbla wood (Gmelina arborea), a lightweight yet durable medium traditionally sourced from the deciduous forests of Kerala, this piece reflects the rich South Indian heritage of temple woodcarving. Kumbla wood is revered for its smooth grain, allowing for the precise detailing required in sacred iconography.

Virgin Mary, or Mother Mary, is shown standing under a high arched mandrola, her hands joined in the gesture of prayer, symbolising compassion, devotion, contemplation and humanity. The facial expression of the Mother is composed and serene, with almond-shaped eyes and arched eyebrows, an elongated nose and fuller lips with a smile. Her head is covered with a veil, reaching up to her shoulders, and she wears a long, flowing robe with a mantle covering her torso.

She is standing under a mandrola, which is radiating light; the artist has used the chiselled technique to carve the slanting lines in the wood. These radiating lines are suggestive of her divinity and her presence. The base of the pedestal is broad and segregated into four wide boxes, adorned with a four-petaled flower motif.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1194/1498/files/1._Mother_Mary_in_Wood_Carving_by_Diya_Handicrafts.png?v=1791355409
