nandi-in-pakko-embroidery
Nandi in Pakko Embroidery

This richly worked square panel showcases Pakko embroidery, a traditional craft of the Sodha Rajput, Meghwal and related communities of Kutch, celebrated for its dense, raised stitching and its flowing floral compositions. A reclining bull, ringed by blossoming vines, brings together devotion, patience, and the botanical grace of the tradition.

The name Pakko means “solid,” and it describes both the look and the durability of the work. Each design is first sketched out, traditionally in mud, and then outlined in chain stitch. The interiors are packed with dense buttonhole and satin stitch variations, which give the motifs a slightly raised, embossed quality. The motifs are generally floral and geometric, and the work is often enriched with small mirrors.

At the centre of the panel rests Nandi, the sacred bull who carries Lord Shiva and stands for steadfast devotion, strength and patience. He reclines in a calm, folded pose, drawn in a clean white chain-stitch outline against a deep navy ground. A saddle cloth in ochre, gold and red, edged with bands of small beads and tassels, sits across his back, and his curved horns rise above a gently lowered head. Behind him, a blue ceremonial parasol on a slender stem opens above his shoulders. In the upper right corner, the golden Lion Capital of Ashoka, the national emblem of India, glows in gold and red thread against the dark ground.

Around the bull and the emblem, a garden climbs through the entire composition. Large crimson blossoms with layered petals open beside smaller pink and purple flowers, and slender green vines curl and wind between them, each tendril ending in a tiny leaf. Small white points are scattered across the ground like pinpricks of light, adding a quiet sparkle.

The palette is deep and jewel-toned. Crimson, pink and gold glow against the navy field, while fresh greens carry the eye along the vines. Bands of fine repeating motifs in green and cream run across the top and bottom, a slender gold line encloses the embroidery, and the panel is mounted on a rich plum fabric.

Material: Casement, Dupion Silk

Design Facilitation & Production Co-ordination By: Shrujan Team

Techniques & Artists: Pakko Hand Embroidery: Khimkorba Ranaji Sodha
