Originally, this craft began in Paralakhemundi in Odisha and later flourished in other parts of the Indian subcontinent such as Bengal, Kerala, and Uttar Pradesh. The polishing techniques help to sustain the black shades on the objects with a smooth and glossy surface.

This utilitarian craft delineates the figure of a peacock standing on a lower pedestal. The depiction of the peacock is rendered in a side profile. Though statically sculpted, the movement of the peacock, the way it turns its head towards the body, suggests movement and harmony in the composition. In Indian art, the symbol of peacock is considered auspicious. Sculpted with soft contours, the body of the peacock is gracefully rendered. The peacock is sculpted with a lyrical and rhythmic quality. The head of the bird is adorned with an ornamental crown crest; its beak is open, resonating with a melodious voice. Each feather is precisely sculpted, though rendered systematically, with proper alignment. Further, the feathers are decorated with white paint to create a decorative effect, with linear motifs and concentric circles.

Beside the figurine of the peacock, to its left, a cylindrical-shaped pen stand is positioned, decorated with linear patterns and concentric circles, forming an abstract flower. The artist has attempted to fill the purpose of functional art with decorative art.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1194/1498/files/1._Peacock_Pen_Stand_in_Horn_Craft_by_Horn_Craft_Dealer.jpg?v=1793880844
