With its central star in full bloom, the piece captures the nomadic heritage and detailed artistry of the Jat community of Kutch.

Jat Garaasiya is a specialized embroidery style practiced by the women of specific subgroups of the Kutchi Jat community, and it is traditionally worked on garment yokes. It is a counted-thread embroidery that relies on a single stitch, a tiny cross stitch in double thread, to create continuous, mosaic-patterned designs.

The composition evokes a lotus in flower, and the composition unfolds outward from its centre in the same way. A star medallion radiates from a red octagonal core. Feathery leaves in crimson, blue and green extend from it in the four principal directions, and between them sit four paisley forms in navy and maroon, picked out with orange details. A stepped line of crimson bars frames a diamond zone around the medallion, and small green leaf sprigs rise from the corners of the field.

The background is a softly worked field of sage green and dusty blue, scattered with slender stems and tiny florets that repeat the larger medallion in miniature. Down both sides, a vertical column of maroon blocks holds a stack of octagon motifs in blue and white, each a small flowering medallion, so the sides read as carefully ruled columns.

The palette is more tonal than many Garaasiya pieces. Cool sage and dusty blue form the field, while crimson, maroon and navy supply the weight, and touches of warm orange add energy. Narrow multicolour borders with fine black grid lines enclose the composition, and the panel is edged in blue with a salmon inner line before being mounted on an ochre-brown fabric.

Material: Satin Silk, Dupion Silk

Design Facilitation & Production Co-ordination By: Shrujan Team

Techniques & Artists: Jat Garasiya Hand Embroidery: Rahilabai Sikandar Jat

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1194/1498/files/1._Pushpakamal_II_in_Jat_Garaasiya_Embroidery.jpg?v=1792063794
