Centred on a ring of mirrors, the piece captures the technical brilliance and nomadic heritage of the Jat community of Kutch.

Jat Daneta is one of the major embroidery styles practiced by specific subgroups of the Kutchi Jat community. Historically worked on the yokes of garments, it is recognised by its dense, sturdy surface, its grid-based geometric motifs, and the tiny mirror embedded at the centre of each motif. The stitching is worked so tightly that the underlying cloth stays hidden, and the interlocking stitches keep the whole panel flat and balanced.

At the centre of the field, a circular ring of small mirrors set in teal and green encloses a knotted, interlaced motif in red. Around this core, a flowing lobed outline, worked in a chain of ochre and maroon links, stretches outward to left and right, giving the composition a gently curving, symmetrical edge. Four round medallions, with radiating spokes of blue, violet and cream, sit within the lobes, each with its own central mirror. The ground around them is a dense mosaic of tiny squares and diamonds in ochre, maroon and cream.

At the top and bottom centre, rectangular panels of chequered and zigzag patterning in gold, brown and cream anchor the composition vertically, balancing the horizontal sweep of the lobed outline. The palette moves between deep reds and maroons, warm ochres and golds, and cool teals and blues, with the mirrors adding points of silver light.

Bands of tiny coloured dashes and geometric repeats form the inner borders, while round mirrored medallions mark the corners of the outer frame. The panel is edged in mustard yellow and mounted on a rich purple fabric.

Material: Dupion Silk

Design Facilitation & Production Co-ordination By: Shrujan Team

Techniques & Artists: Jat Dhaneta Hand Embroidery: Alabhachai Ayub Jat
