About the Artwork +
Discover the artistry of Bengal's embroidered textiles in "The Harmonious Cosmos," a magnificent Kantha creation by Mahamaya Sikdar. This stunning work showcases the region's rich heritage of transforming discarded fabrics into intricate narratives. For centuries, women in rural Bengal have practiced Kantha, stitching layers of old sarees to create quilts, prayer mats, and ceremonial cloths. Mythologically, Kantha finds its connection with folklore, where it was believed that stitching together worn fabrics would bring good fortune and protection. This particular Kantha, celebrates the harmony of the cosmos, symbolic to the nature, depicting a mesmerizing array of motifs featuring human figures, animals, birds, and floral patterns, all framed within a delicate border. At the heart of the design lies a radiant, mandala-like floral motif, symbolizing the cycle of life and cosmic energy. This motif is integral to Kantha embroidery, reflecting the celebration of unity. The surrounding squares tell stories of village life, where peacocks, elephants, deer, and mythical creatures coexist, reflecting the age-old reverence for nature in Indian culture. The dancing figures, dressed in traditional attire, evoke the joy of festivities, while the intertwining floral vines signify growth, fertility, and interconnectedness. In the past, such motifs were symbolic of protection, prosperity, and devotion, stitched with love and prayers. Today, artists like Mahamaya Sikdar carry forward this legacy, not just preserving a fading heritage but also giving it contemporary relevance. Her work is a bridge between tradition and modern artistry, ensuring that Kantha remains an evolving expression of storytelling, craftsmanship, and sustainability in an ever-changing world.
