About the Artwork +

Renowned artist Prakash Yasala invites the viewers to embark on a visual journey that celebrates cultural cadence through his masterpiece, Kolatam Dance Batik Painting. This mesmerizing Batik painting on a black cotton canvas pulsates with life as it captures the vibrant essence of the age-old Kolatam dance. Two women gracefully sway amidst intricate patterns, their fluid movements translated onto fabric using Napthol dyes. The strategic use of white, crimson, yellow, and pink delves into color theory, embodying unity (white), energy (crimson), joy (yellow), and grace (pink). Yasala's meticulous artistry not only adorns spaces but also preserves a cherished narrative of tradition and unity, where every hue and stroke dances together in harmony.

Batik Art

Batik is an ancient art that uses wax and dyes to create designs on fabrics. Originating in Indonesia, Batik involves the art of wax-resist dyeing on fabric. Over the centuries, this traditional technique made its way to India, where it melded with the rich dictionary of Indian craftsmanship. Regions like Gujarat, Rajasthan, and West Bengal have vibrant Batik traditions, each with its unique style and motifs. Details A Batik creation involves 3 basic steps – waxing, dyeing, and scraping (removing). Craftsmen apply wax to specific areas, depending on the design of the fabric before dyeing it. The wax acts as a resistance, preventing the dye from penetrating the waxed areas and creating intricate patterns and designs. The artist dips the waxed cloth in dyes and the wax applied resists the color. It provides the luxury of being selective about the color. Simply artists remove the wax with boiling water and repeat the process if different colors are to be used. Overall, this meticulous process requires skilled artisans who meticulously apply wax using tools like stamps, resulting in breathtaking designs ranging from floral motifs to geometric patterns.
