About

Tholu is Telegu for leather, while Bommalu is Telegu for puppet dance. Tholu is claimed to have started during the reign of the Satavahana dynasty about 200 BCE. However, the oldest evidence for it dates back to the 15th century, under the reign of Krishnadeva Raya of the Vijayanagara kingdom. Tholu Bommalata preparation is intertwined with the region's shadow puppetry. In the region, there are two types of shadow puppetry: sutram bommalata and koyya bommalata. In 2008, the Government of India designated it as a Geographical Indication.
