About the Artwork +

Crafted by Shri Bholanath Karmakar, the 7-piece Suri Bowl set, also known as Sherpai, embodies the essence of traditional craftsmanship. Each bowl, meticulously carved from wood and adorned with brass bindings and ornaments, exudes a rustic charm. These bowls, steeped in history, served a practical purpose in measuring rice, paddy, and other grains in traditional Indian households. The simplicity of the design belies the skill and precision required to create each piece. Shri Bholanath Karmakar's attention to detail is evident in the seamless integration of wood and brass, resulting in a cohesive and visually striking ensemble. These Suri Bowls not only reflect the practical needs of their time but also carry with them the cultural heritage and traditions of generations past. Today, the 7-piece Suri Bowl set serves as both a functional kitchen tool and a nostalgic reminder of simpler times, preserving the legacy of craftsmanship for future generations to appreciate.
Sherpai, or Suri bowls, were essential wooden measuring tools in Bengal, primarily used by affluent farmers and zamindars to measure grains like rice and paddy. These sets of twelve bowls, ranging from 1 mon to 1 chhotaak, were meticulously hand-carved from various woods and embellished with engraved brass recycled from utensils. Originating in the late 18th century, the craft involved over 40 intricate steps and was passed down through generations. Despite its historical significance, Sherpai bowls have transitioned from functional tools to decorative pieces due to changing market demands. Today, only one family in West Bengal continues this tradition, highlighting its endangered status. Efforts to revive the craft include government support and organizational initiatives to preserve and promote this cultural heritage. While facing challenges, the legacy of Sherpai bowls perseveres, upheld by dedicated artisans and initiatives aimed at safeguarding this cherished tradition.
