This Warli painting by Dilip Bahotha depicts a Fisherman. In this composition, the artist depicts a fisherman standing on the shore with a fishing net or a fishing rod in his hand, ready to catch fish. The painting illustrates the fisherman using his Fishing Net, also called Paagir. Fishing is a significant source of food and income for the Warli community. It is also an activity organised with great zeal. The fisherman is a powerful symbol that reflects the deep spiritual beliefs and reverence for nature that are central to Warli culture. The golden rule for the community is to take only what is necessary from the natural world. Giraah, the god and protector of the seas, should not be insulted in the event of fishing, according to the Warlis, who think that one should not act avariciously concerning one’s portion of the catch.
