About the Artwork +

Artist Dolon Kundu in Terracotta Diya designs a shallow bowl-like diya with a floral design in the center and a leaf border. The floral design in the center and the leaf border together symbolizes the harmony between human life and nature. It signifies the connection between the human soul and the natural world, emphasizing the importance of balance and respect for the environment. This type of diya is commonly used during various Indian festivals, including Diwali. During Diwali, the lighting of diyas like these represents the victory of light over darkness, both in the physical world and within ourselves. The floral and leaf motifs enhance the overall festive atmosphere and add cultural richness to the celebration. Lighting a diya with this design is not just a practical act but also a spiritual one. It is a way of connecting with the divine, seeking blessings, and expressing gratitude for the abundance and beauty of life.

Teracotta art has been practised in India for thousands of years, dating back to the Indus Valley civilization. Clay is used to make earthenware, figurines, and other ornamental items. Clay is dried and then fried at extremely high temperatures to allow it to take shape. The artform also has a spiritual importance, as it is claimed in Hinduism that this material uses the five components of the universe: air, water, fire, ether, and earth. States including as Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, and Rajasthan have a long and illustrious history with the art form.
