About the Artwork +

Swarna Chitrakar's Bengal Pattachitra unfolds a poignant scene from the Ramayana, where the central focus is the valiant bird, Jatayu, who emerges as the heroic savior of Sita. The canvas is adorned with intricate patterns and vibrant colors, showcasing the artist's mastery in the traditional Bengal art style.
In the heart of the composition, the courageous Jatayu takes center stage, wings outstretched, symbolizing his unwavering commitment to righteousness. The surrounding motifs capture the intensity of the moment when Sita, captured by Ravana, is rescued by the noble bird. Swarna Chitrakar's skilled strokes bring to life the emotional depth of the scene, emphasizing the crucial role played by Jatayu in this divine narrative.
Jatayu, the mighty eagle, is a symbol of sacrifice and loyalty. His selfless act of intervening to protect Sita, even in the face of overwhelming odds, embodies the essence of dharma. The artist's portrayal highlights Jatayu's noble character, making him a central figure in this Pattachitra masterpiece—a visual testament to the valor and devotion that permeate the Ramayana's timeless narrative.

    Bengal Pattachitra

The Bengal Pattachitra is a visual and oral art tradition practised by the Patuas or Chitrakars of West Bengal. Islamic by faith, Patua artists represent a unique and secular art tradition. They earn their livelihood by telling stories from Hindu Mythology, local folklores, Sufi tradition and contemporary themes through paintings and songs. Though the origin of the Patua tradition has been difficult to trace for art historians, some claim the oral form goes back all the way to the 10th or 11th century CE!
