About the Artwork +

This Shola Murti of Maa Saraswati- the Hindu Goddess of Knowledge, Wisdom, Art & Music. The goddess Saraswati is often depicted as a beautiful woman dressed in pure white- the colour symbolises Sattwa Guna or purity, discrimination for true knowledge, insight and wisdom. The four hands hold items with symbolic meaning – a pustaka (book or script), a rosary or mala, a water pot and a musical instrument Veena representing all the creative arts and sciences embodying knowledge that creates harmony. She is mounted on a Hansa or Swan which is a sacred bird in Hindu mythology with the ability to discern between good and evil. Due to this association, Maa Saraswati is also known as Hansavahini. She is usually depicted near a flowing river or another body of water, which depiction may constitute a reference to her early history as a river goddess.
