Artist Gyaltsen Zimba represents Shakyamuni, also known as Siddhartha Gautama, the historical Buddha and the central figure in Buddhism as he is the founder of Buddhism, a major spiritual and philosophical tradition originated in India around 2,500 years ago. His attainment of enlightenment signifies the pinnacle of human spiritual achievement, the painting portraying him in the state of serene meditation, symbolizing the attainment of enlightenment and inner peace. Shakyamuni's physical attributes in the painting including his characteristic hand gestures, the elongated earlobes signifying his princely origins, the topknot symbolizing his heightened wisdom.
