About the Artwork +

Jayesh Sharma paints lord Shreenath ji in this Pichwai Painting. Shreenath ji is the manifestation of lord Krishna as a seven-year old child who lifted the mighty Govardhan Hill on his fingertip, to protect the settlers of Vrindavan from the wrath of Indra. The intricate lines and rich details of the painting showcase the deity in beautiful clothes and jewellery as he lifts up the Govardhana Hill on his left hand, while his right hand holds lotus blooms symbolising spritual attainment. Meanwhile, his firm posture implies the balance of yoga and bhoga.

The art of Pichwai originated over 400 years ago, illustrating tales of Shrinathji, an incarnation of Krishna, the deity manifest as a seven-year-old child. Prominent in th Nathadwara region of Rajasthan especially in the Vaishnavite sect, the paintings are hand-painted on cloth or paper and depict different scenes and stills.

Jayesh Sharma ji, has been a Pichwai artist for more than 38 years and his family has been practicing this art for 400 years too – more than 9 generations of their family have been Pichwai artists and have been associated with the temple at Nathdwara.

This painting is made to order and will take 2-3 weeks to be painted once the order has been placed.

He considers his profession to be a commitment and as a responsibility towards soceity. One of his favourite themes is the Annakut festivities. His grandfather's Gangaramji Sharma's art was on exhibit at Mumbai's Bhuleshwar temple. His paintings can be seen in the Shrinathji temple in Nathdwara and Udaipur, the Badrinath temple in Manasa, Madhya Pradesh, the Dakor temple in Gujarat, and the Bada Mandir Haveli in Mumbai. Indra Daman Goswami ji has awarded him a Prasashti Patra for his services to the Lord's Wall at Nathdwara.
