About the Artwork +

Adarsh Appukkuttan in his Kerala Mural painting inventively represents Mars with bold orange and black shades surrounded by intricate detailing in blocks. Mars is a powerful and universally recognized symbol in various cultures and religions. In Mars' breathtaking painting, the artist, with a touch of ingenuity, captures the essence of the Red Planet using bold shades of orange and black, encased in intricate border detailing. Mars, a potent and universally recognized symbol across various cultures and religions, finds new life in this artistic representation. The bold orange color is often used in Kerala mural paintings, representing auspiciousness, energy, and spirituality. Black symbolizes mystery or a sense of depth. The combination of these colors suggests a balance between the known and the unknown, the visible and the concealed. The intricate detailing in blocks represents the meticulous and painstaking craftsmanship involved in creating these artworks, adding to the overall aesthetic appeal of the painting.
One notable feature of Kerala mural paintings is the border design that frames the central subject in this painting the artist has skilfully painted vibrant motifs for borders, where the shading and effect give it a look of borders placed upon one another. These borders are usually adorned with intricate patterns and designs, often drawing inspiration from traditional architectural and cultural motifs. These decorative borders not only serve to enhance the overall visual impact of the mural but also highlight the central theme or deity, adding to the art's cultural and aesthetic richness.

    Kerala Mural

Kerala mural art is a traditional form of painting that originated in the southern Indian state of Kerala. Rooted in religious narratives, Kerala mural art has evolved over centuries to become a celebrated cultural heritage of India. History and Tradition The history of Kerala mural art can be traced back to the ancient temples and palaces of Kerala, where these magnificent paintings adorned the walls as expressions of devotion and artistic excellence. Dating back to as early as the 9th century CE, Kerala murals can be seen in places like Thirunadhikkara cave, Vaikom temple, Padmanabhaswamy temple etc.  Themes Generally, Kerala mural paintings are inspired by Hindu mythology, depicting scenes from the epics Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Puranas. These paintings often portray gods, goddesses, celestial beings, and mythological creatures in elaborate detail, conveying stories of love, valor, and divine intervention reflecting the rich tapestry of Indian mythology and spirituality. Techniques and Details Kerala mural art is characterized by meticulous attention to detail, vibrant colors, and beautiful compositions. At first, artists prepare the wall with layers of lime and sand mixture. Natural pigments derived from minerals, plants, and metals, are used to draw outlines and later fill the colors, using brushes made from natural fibers. Artists skillfully incorporate architectural features such as pillars, arches, and doorways into their compositions, creating a sense of depth and dimensionality. The paintings are often adorned with decorative motifs and geometric patterns, adding to their visual appeal.
