About the Artwork +

Jayesh Sharma captures an exquisite portrayal of Lord Krishna's divine dance with the gopis in a lush grass field, set against a radiant and ethereal backdrop. At the heart of this mesmerising Pichwai painting stands Lord Krishna, the epitome of divine love and charm. He is depicted in his iconic blue complexion, adorned with ornate jewellery and a vibrant peacock feather crown that gracefully rests atop his dark locks. Each gopi is uniquely adorned in resplendent traditional attire, with their colourful garments and intricate jewellery adding a touch of grandeur to the composition. Their eyes are fixated on Krishna, reflecting both adoration and devotion. The grass field where this divine dance unfolds is rendered with meticulous detail. The backdrop of this Pichwai painting is equally enchanting. A soft, luminous light emanates from a radiant, lotus-filled pond, symbolising the purity and divinity of the scene. The artwork captures the essence of Lord Krishna's eternal love and devotion, making it a breathtaking representation of Pichwai artistry and the divine connection between Lord Krishna and his beloved gopis.

Jayesh

Jayesh Sharma ji, who resides in Nathdwara, Rajasthan, has been a Pichwai artist for more than 38 years, and his family has been practising this art for 400 years as well, with 9 generations of his family being Pichwai painters and linked with the temple in Nathdwara. He is currently teaching his children to carry on the family legacy. He enjoys experimenting with his paintings while keeping the beliefs and tale untouched. He considers his profession to be a commitment and as a responsibility towards soceity. One of his favourite themes is the Annakut festivities. His grandfather's Gangaramji Sharma's art was on exhibit at Mumbai's Bhuleshwar temple. His paintings can be seen in the Shrinathji temple in Nathdwara and Udaipur, the Badrinath temple in Manasa, Madhya Pradesh, the Dakor temple in Gujarat, and the Bada Mandir Haveli in Mumbai. Indra Daman Goswami ji has awarded him a Prasashti Patra for his services to the Lord's Wall at Nathdwara. He clearly embodies the adage, "Allow your passion to become your mission, and it will one day become your vocation."

Pichwai Art

Pichwai art (also known as pichhavai, pichhvai, pechhavai etc) is a traditional form of painting that originated in Nathdwara, Rajasthan. These paintings are typically used as decorative backdrops in Hindu temples, particularly those dedicated to Lord Shrinathji or Krishna. Pichwai literally means ‘that which hangs from the back’ and comes from the Sanskrit words ‘Pich – back and Wais- hanging. Other than its artistic appeal, it is created with the intention to narrate the tales of Krishna to its devotees. History and Tradition The origins of Pichwai art date back to the late 17th century when the Nathdwara temple was established in Rajasthan. These were traditionally commissioned by the temple priests for religious worship and ceremonies and often narrate the stories of Krishna's life, like his childhood Leela, the Raas Leela, Govardhan Leela, and other significant events. Other subjects depicted are the changing seasons, with detailed representations of flora, fauna, and traditional Rajasthani architecture. Techniques Pichwai paintings are known for their detailed work and vivid use of colors. Traditionally, the paintings are created on cloth or canvas using natural dyes and pigments. Artists begin with the sketch of the painting and later natural colours are filled with brushes. Occasionally, they are enhanced by adding gems and crystals. Gold and silver leaf are also used to add a touch of opulence to the paintings.
