About the Artwork +

Our Aparna Terracotta Sculpture pays homage to the revered Goddess Parvati and her significant name, Aparna, meaning "without leaf" or "the leafless one." This name holds a fascinating story found in the ancient Puranas associated with Lord Shiva. Crafted with remarkable artistry, this terracotta sculpture beautifully captures the essence of Parvati's unwavering determination to win the heart of Lord Shiva. Depicted in her meditative form, she is shown deep in austere devotion, emulating the ascetic lifestyle led by Shiva himself. With every intricate detail meticulously crafted, the sculpture portrays Parvati's serene presence as she meditates without any covering, symbolizing her selfless dedication. The absence of even a single leaf accentuates her divine commitment to her mission.

Teracotta art has been practised in India for thousands of years, dating back to the Indus Valley civilization. Clay is used to make earthenware, figurines, and other ornamental items. Clay is dried and then fried at extremely high temperatures to allow it to take shape. The artform also has a spiritual importance, as it is claimed in Hinduism that this material uses the five components of the universe: air, water, fire, ether, and earth. States including as Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, and Rajasthan have a long and illustrious history with the art form.
