About the Artwork +

In this captivating Bengal Pattachitra painting by the skilled artist Swarna Chitrakar, the radiant goddess Saraswati graces the canvas in her divine manifestation. The central focus is on Ma Saraswati, adorned with elegance, holding her veena, and accompanied by her celestial companion, the swan. The background of the painting is a striking red hue, symbolizing the energy, passion, and vibrancy associated with the goddess of knowledge and arts. Against this vivid backdrop, a large sun radiates warmth and enlightenment, casting a celestial glow that envelops Saraswati in a halo of divine light.

Saraswati's veena, delicately held in her hands, symbolizes the harmonious union of music and knowledge. Swarna Chitrakar's attention to detail is evident in the intricate patterns adorning the goddess's attire, adding an extra layer of grace and sophistication to the portrayal. The swan, Saraswati's devoted companion, gracefully accompanies her, embodying purity and transcendence. The celestial sun in the background, besides being a radiant visual element, may also symbolize the source of knowledge and wisdom, casting its benevolent rays upon the goddess. The red background, with its intensity, creates a sense of dynamism and passion, emphasizing the transformative power of knowledge. Swarna Chitrakar's choice of color and composition not only pays homage to tradition but also infuses the painting with a contemporary vibrancy

    Bengal Pattachitra

The Bengal Pattachitra is a visual and oral art tradition practised by the Patuas or Chitrakars of West Bengal. Islamic by faith, Patua artists represent a unique and secular art tradition. They earn their livelihood by telling stories from Hindu Mythology, local folklores, Sufi tradition and contemporary themes through paintings and songs. Though the origin of the Patua tradition has been difficult to trace for art historians, some claim the oral form goes back all the way to the 10th or 11th century CE!
