About the Workshop +

Paint eco-friendly masks that can be added as a pop decor in your home or add them to your garden accessories. Cheriyal masks are an alternative representation of Cheriyal scroll paintings. They were used to depict life sized characters who appeared in the tales of Telangana’s wandering storytellers narrating local folklores.

This will be a one day workshop of two hours each - children above 6 could join.

Sai will guide you on how to create the basic drawing and the other intricacies of Cheriyal Mask Art. In this workshop we will be working on two masks while diving deep into the working of traditional mask making techniques using eco-friendly Paints.

Please note: We will be sending a ready to paint mask prepared by the artist himself. We will be using natural colours to paint over the masks.

Sai Kiran Dhanalakota blue-tick

Sai

Sai Kiran, a 27-year-old artist, is credited with carrying on the history of the Dhanalakota family, the last practising family for Cheriyal Scroll painting. A 160-year-old Cheriyal scroll painted by his great-great grandpa is also on display in a museum in Paris, providing insight into his family's past. With the market for Cheriyal scrolls decreasing, his parents advised him to study rather than pursue painting, but Sai Kiran obtained a degree in fine arts to acquire new art techniques to modernise and make his work relevant in today's times. He wishes the Cheriyal scroll painters knew more about the stories they are painting, because the storytellers for these paintings are autonomous and add their own colour to the stories, but he makes an attempt to study these stories, and his personal favourite is Gaurapuranama's, about Toddy Tappers (Wine tappers). 'We replace our phones every year, our phone covers every two months, change is such a constant, therefore our work needs to stay up with it and adapt,' Sai Kiran says.

Cheriyal Scroll

Cheriyal scrolls, resembling a living narrative akin to cinematic reels or comic strips, intricately weave tales sourced from the tapestry of Indian mythology. Painted in vibrant, predominantly primary hues, with fiery red backgrounds dominating, these artworks exude the unrestricted creative spirit of local artisans, unfettered by the shackles of formal academia. Spanning over four centuries, the cherished tradition of Cheriyal scroll painting is intrinsically woven into the storytelling legacy of its region. These narratives find their roots in the familiarity of ancient literary, mythological, and folk traditions. Unlike scroll paintings in other parts of Asia, which adorned the courts and noble abodes, India's scrolls were the province of wandering bards and village artists, deeply embedded in the rural fabric of life. Though once a prominent artistic expression across Andhra and neighboring regions, each infused with its unique flavors and local customs, Cheriyal scrolls have sought refuge in Cheriyal town, Telangana. Here, they stand as the last bastion, as the waves of modernity, in the form of television, cinema, and computers, steadily encircle this captivating tradition.
