In artist Kalyan Joshi's mesmerizing Phad Painting, the enigmatic world of Ashtavinyak unfolds before the eyes. This intricate artwork encapsulates the eight diverse avatars of Lord Ganesha as recorded in the Mugdala Purana, each incarnation a profound reflection of intricate philosophical concepts. Joshi's strokes bring forth Vakratunda, the Twisting Trunk, riding majestically on a lion, followed by Ekdanta, the Single Tusk, embodying the essence of Brahman. The canvas then reveals Mahodar, the Big Belly, a synthesis of Vakratunda and Ekdanta, and Ganjana, the Elephant Face, his counterpart. Lambodar, the Pendulous Belly, representing Shakti's pure power, takes form, followed by Vikata, the Unusual Form, personifying Surya's illuminating nature, perched atop a vibrant peacock. Kalyan Joshi's artistic journey commenced when he was just eight years old, as he embarked on a creative voyage under the guidance of his father and revered Guru, Shree Shrilal Joshi. The Joshi family has proudly upheld the rich tradition of Phad artistry for generations.

Kalyan Joshi's contributions to the Phad art form are truly remarkable. His monochromatic interpretations and collaborations with narrative poetry have expanded the horizons of Phad painting, pushing its boundaries beyond conventional norms. His dedication and innovation in the field of Phad painting were duly recognized when he was awarded the prestigious National Award in 2012.

In addition to his artistic endeavors, Kalyan Joshi has also made a significant impact through the establishment of "ANKAN" Kala Sansthan. This initiative has played a pivotal role in introducing Phad paintings to countless young enthusiasts, ensuring the preservation and propagation of this traditional art form for generations to come.

Phad

 

The Phad painting tradition is widely prevalent in the western state of Rajasthan. It is a folk heritage which is part of both the tangible and intangible aspects of our heritage. Traditionally, the Phad paintings were religious and seldom done commercially. However, today we see its commercialization as it is not possible for the artists to survive solely on the basis of commissions from religious Phad. There has been no literary record of the development or even the mention of Phad in the court traditions of the provincial courts of Rajasthan. This is because these paintings were not made for artistic purposes but were religious in nature.

Phad paintings are the most complex and elaborate of the pictorial devices used for story telling in India. They were traditionally used as movie scrolls, with special emphasis on each scene. They narrated the stories of local folk deities such as Pabuji, Devnarayan, Ramdev pir, Dharamraj, etc. These local heroes are different from each other, but are worshipped because of the similar reason that they have all protected their cattle.

The history of Phad paintings date back to 700 years and are of pure indian subcontinental origin. The chitera, or the professional Phad painters developed the art form in the district of Pur, near Bhilwara, Rajasthan. The traditional painters migrated to Shahpura in the 16th century and then to the city of Bhilwara in the 19th century.
