About the Artwork +

Harjeet Kaur's Phulkari embroidery is a tapestry of traditional artistry, showcasing a harmonic blend of avian motifs. The piece is adorned with intricate stitches that bring to life a vibrant array of birds, each detailed with its own unique combination of colors and patterns. The embroidery work displays a mastery of the phulkari craft, with every thread meticulously contributing to the overall design. Kaur's use of bold, contrasting colors accentuates the movement and grace of the birds, symbolizing freedom and cultural richness. This work is a testament to the enduring legacy of phulkari in celebrating nature and heritage.

Phulkari is a traditional embroidery art form originating from the Punjab region of India and Pakistan. The name "Phulkari" translates to "flower work," reflecting the intricate floral motifs that are characteristic of this craft. Skilled artisans hand embroider vibrant threads onto plain fabric, creating colorful and intricate patterns that often cover the entire cloth. Phulkari embroidery is known for its geometric designs, bold colors, and densely stitched patterns that convey stories, emotions, and cultural symbols. Historically, Phulkari was worn by women as part of their everyday attire or as bridal trousseau items, symbolizing prosperity, happiness, and tradition. Today, Phulkari continues to be treasured for its beauty, craftsmanship, and cultural significance.

Phulkari

Flowers and colors crafted in various geometrical patterns clout together to form up the art of ‘Phulkari’. This exceptionally beautiful embroidery is believed to have come from the lands of Persia. This word first appeared in Punjabi literature in the 18th century. Waris Shah's Heer Ranjha describes the trousseau of Heer and lists various articles of clothing with Phulkari among them. It is the rural handcrafted embroidery culture of Punjab, often known as Punjab folk embroidery. Despite the fact that Phulkari denotes flowery work, the designs in this needlework incorporated themes, geometrical patterns, and forms in addition to flowers. The Phulkari needlework is colourful and vivid in general, adding brightness to people's life. Phulkari embroidery is very popular all over the world. It was created by women and honours female empowerment.
