About the Artwork +

Refined artist Bapi Chitrakar's "Devotion in Painting" unveils the profound world of Kalighat art, where brush strokes meet spirituality. In this piece, a woman delicately handpaints the divine couple, Radha-Krishna embodying her unwavering devotion. Each stroke on the canvas is a prayer, a form of worship, and a testament to the spiritual connection between the artist and her God, Lord Krishna. Kalighat painting, with its vibrant hues and intricate patterns, is a visual symphony of devotion. It hails from the Kalighat region in Kolkata, India, where it originated as a form of souvenir art for pilgrims visiting the Kali Temple. This art form marries traditional motifs with a kaleidoscope of colors, reflecting the artist's deep-rooted faith. This artwork beautifully encapsulates the belief that devotion is not merely an emotion but a commitment to all acts that ignite the flame of devotion. Chitrakar's work, a radiant gem in the world of Kalighat art, serves as a captivating reminder of the spiritual synergy between art and faith.

Bapi Chitrakar, a seasoned artist since childhood, hails from a lineage deeply rooted in artistry. Embracing Islamic faith, Patua artists like Bapi Chitrakar exemplify a distinct, inclusive artistic tradition. They breathe life into narratives from Hindu Mythology, local folklore, Sufi wisdom, and contemporary themes through the mesmerizing fusion of paintings and songs. While tracing the exact origins of Patua tradition poses a challenge, some believe its oral form dates back to the 10th or 11th century CE, with tangible scrolls emerging in the 18th century CE.
