About the Artwork +

In the intricate realm of traditional Khovar art by Manik Chand Mahto, a majestic peacock struts with an air of regal elegance. Amidst the monochromatic landscape of black and white, this peacock stands out, adorned in a darker shade, its feathers meticulously crafted with precise strokes of black paint. In its habitat, amidst the stark contrast of light and shadow, the peacock's presence is both striking and harmonious. Through the skilled hands of Mahto, the essence of the peacock's grace and beauty is captured, transcending the limitations of color to evoke a sense of timeless wonder and admiration.
Khovar painting, a cherished tradition among indigenous and artisan communities in the Hazaribagh region of Jharkhand, Eastern India, adorns nuptial chambers with its vibrant hues. Serving as a hallmark of the wedding season commencing in January and stretching until the onset of the monsoon in June, Khovar paintings breathe life into the ambiance. The term "Khovar" finds its roots in the local dialect, where "kho" signifies chamber or cave, while "var" represents a married couple. Thus, these intricate murals not only embellish the space but also symbolize the union of two souls embarking on their journey together.

    Manikchand
Manikchand Mahto, a 32-year-old artist specializing in Sohrai and Khovar art forms, hails from Hazaribagh, Jharkhand, where he has been practicing his craft for the past 8 to 10 years, drawing inspiration from his mother and carrying on the tradition within his entire family. With his schooling completed in Jharkhand, Manikchand has expanded his artistic horizons through various workshops and programs across the country, imparting his knowledge to college students in places like NIT Patna, Chapra, and Shivan, and participating in events such as Lalit Kala Academy programs in cities like Bhubaneswar, Ranchi, Kolkata, and Delhi. Manikchand's artworks, displayed prominently even in prestigious locations like Sansad Bhawan in Delhi, are a testament to his dedication to capturing the essence of nature and traditional motifs on handmade canvases. Inspired by the sights and sounds of his surroundings, he finds beauty in the rocks and flora, translating them into mesmerizing paintings featuring elements like tigers, Pashupatinath, flowers, and peacocks. Despite facing challenges like language barriers and limited market demand, Manikchand remains hopeful for opportunities to showcase his art internationally, believing that his unique perspective on nature-inspired art can resonate with audiences far beyond his homeland.
