About the Artwork +

This exquisite Gond painting by Venkat Shyam presents a singular, intricately detailed fish, skillfully infused with elements of nature and indigenous storytelling. The fish’s body is divided into distinct sections, each portraying a different aspect of its essence.

Its head, adorned in a striking pinkish-red hue, is decorated with fine, circular wave patterns. This signature motif of the artist, known as half concentric circles, resembles a half-moon and signifies his village and community – a distinct identity pattern. Intertwined within these half cricle are dots, representing the Supreme God and the artist's profound source of inspiration, further emphasizing movement and fluidity. The large, expressive eye, a signature motif in Gond art, adds a sense of wisdom and awareness to the creature.

The central body of the fish is an amalgamation of textures and forms. One section features meticulous black stippling, which, on close observation, reveals the artist's signature 'Lahrdaar' or 'Choppy Waves' pattern. This not only signifies dynamic movement and the fish’s resilience but also showcases the artist's unique hand. Within another section, a mountainous shape, filled with serene white and blue hues, evokes the idea of water bodies and the symbiotic relationship between land and aquatic life.

Beneath this magnificent fish, a school of tiny, vibrantly colored red and yellow fish swim freely, illustrating the interconnectedness of life within the underwater world. The main fish's elongated tail and fins are meticulously lined with delicate wave-like strokes in blue and black, creating a sense of graceful movement, as if it is gliding effortlessly through the depths of a mystical river. A thin fishing line subtly extends from the top of the composition, gently hinting at human interaction with nature. Venkat Shyam’s masterful use of contrasting colors and intricate detailing breathes life into this artwork, seamlessly blending traditional Gond storytelling with contemporary aesthetics.

Venkat Raman Singh Shyam blue-tick

Venkat
Venkat Raman Singh Shyam, a visionary artist from the Gond community, has crafted a unique artistic language that is deeply rooted in his heritage and spirituality. In his art, he finds inspiration in the Bindu, a symbol representing the supreme god, and the half-moon that surrounds it, symbolizing his village and community. These elements form the foundation of his distinctive style, a style that he believes shares common threads with the works of renowned artists like Dali and Picasso. Venkat's artistic journey began at the tender age of ten when he began etching the world around him onto the walls of his home and whatever scraps of newspaper he could find. Born into a Gond Pardhan family in Madhya Pradesh's Sejohra village, he has dedicated the past four decades to the world of art. Under the tutelage of his late uncle, the esteemed Gond artist Jangarh Singh Shyam, Venkat learned to forge his own artistic path. His art beautifully weaves together the rich tapestry of his clan's historical legends with contemporary perspectives of the world. Venkat's work is a testament to the fluidity of tradition and the evolving narratives that connect the past with the present. As he aptly puts it, "Change is the ultimate rule of nature and the universe." While deeply rooted in tradition and mythology, his art constantly adapts to resonate with diverse audiences, bridging the gap between ancient stories and contemporary interpretations.
