About the Artwork +
This evocative Gond painting by Venkat Shyam, titled "Museum Artefact: A Preserved Tiger ", is a compelling commentary on perception, memory, and the silent stories that museum artifacts carry. The composition is anchored by two diamond-shaped frames set against a warm, earthy brown backdrop, suggestive of ancient walls and timeless spaces.
Within the left frame emerges the meticulously rendered head of a bull, adorned with a gleaming gold chain and a small plaque that reads “DO NOT TOUCH,” a phrase loaded with irony and reflection in this context. The tiger's expressive eye and slightly open mouth seem to defy the static, muted world of museum exhibits, hinting at the once-vibrant life and sacred role such animals held in cultural narratives.
Above both frames, two burning lamps cast a symbolic glow, referencing ritual, remembrance, and the spiritual weight of objects deemed worthy of preservation. The painting cleverly juxtaposes presence and void, artifact and memory, raising questions about what remains and what is forgotten within institutional walls. Interestingly, Venkat Shyam also incorporates his signature patterns, i.e., Lahrdaar or Choppy Waves, within the tiger's body, giving it movement and dynamism.
Adorning the tiger artifact, the detailed white dots placed within the orange diamonds provide remarkable texture and depth. These patterns powerfully represent spiritualism and the origin of the universe, their extension beyond the frame suggesting a boundless spirit that transcends any physical enclosure. Venkat Shyam masterfully transforms this static “museum object” into a living, questioning entity.
