About the Artwork +

Venkat Shyam captures a majestic tiger at the heart of the canvas in a vivid and harmonious portrayal of the interconnectedness of life. At the centre of this artwork, the tiger stands as a symbol of strength, grace, and the untamed spirit of the wilderness. Venkat Shyam's meticulous attention to detail brings the tiger's powerful form to life, from its striking stripes to its piercing eyes. Instead of a conventional depiction, the tiger's body is ingeniously composed of a multitude of birds, each intricately rendered in the distinctive Gond style. The background, a bold and passionate red, serves as a backdrop to this captivating portrayal. Venkat Shyam's Gond artwork masterfully melds the ferocity of the tiger with the delicate beauty of birds, weaving a narrative that celebrates the harmony and balance of nature.

    Venkat Raman Singh Shyam blue-tick

    Venkat

Venkat Raman Singh Shyam, a visionary artist from the Gond community, has crafted a unique artistic language that is deeply rooted in his heritage and spirituality. In his art, he finds inspiration in the Bindu, a symbol representing the supreme god, and the half-moon that surrounds it, symbolizing his village and community. These elements form the foundation of his distinctive style, a style that he believes shares common threads with the works of renowned artists like Dali and Picasso.

Venkat's artistic journey began at the tender age of ten when he began etching the world around him onto the walls of his home and whatever scraps of newspaper he could find. Born into a Gond Pardhan family in Madhya Pradesh's Sejohra village, he has dedicated the past four decades to the world of art. Under the tutelage of his late uncle, the esteemed Gond artist Jangarh Singh Shyam, Venkat learned to forge his own artistic path.

His art beautifully weaves together the rich tapestry of his clan's historical legends with contemporary perspectives of the world. Venkat's work is a testament to the fluidity of tradition and the evolving narratives that connect the past with the present. As he aptly puts it, "Change is the ultimate rule of nature and the universe." While deeply rooted in tradition and mythology, his art constantly adapts to resonate with diverse audiences, bridging the gap between ancient stories and contemporary interpretations.

    Gond

Gond art is a traditional form of painting practiced by the Gond tribal communities of central India, primarily in the states of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. It is characterized by its vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and depictions of nature, animals, and tribal life. From peacocks, and elephants, to an ant, each creation tells a story and reflects the close relation of the Gond people with their environment. Artists use fine lines and dots to create elaborate motifs, often incorporating elements of folklore, mythology, and spirituality into their designs. The art form was passed down orally from generation to generation, with artists using natural materials like leaves, mud, and charcoal to create elaborate designs on walls, floors, and other surfaces. Details According to Gond mythology, the art of painting originated from the Gondi deity, Devi Maoli. It is believed by the Gond people that Devi Maoli taught the first Gond artist, the secrets of painting during a dream. Since then, Gond art has been considered a sacred form of expression by its practitioners. Gond people believe that good images are the harbinger of good luck so they decorate their houses with traditional motifs. Gond art has gained international recognition for its unique aesthetic appeal and cultural significance. An interesting fact about Gond is that each artist has a distinctive signature style. For them, the ethos of life is a mixture of myth and reality, of organic and inorganic forms.
