About the Artwork +

Renowned artisan Javed Hassan's "Usta Kala" unveils the enchanting world of Gold Embossing Work, known as Sunahari Manovati. Rooted in the Persian word "ustad," meaning master, Usta art is a rich amalgamation of diverse artistic forms and techniques. The centerpiece of this artistry today is the resplendent gold embossing work, applied to a myriad of surfaces. Originally, Usta art adorned walls exclusively, but during the British colonial era; it found new life on lightweight materials for easy transportation. Camel leather pots were repurposed to transport oils and fragrances. In the contemporary context, Usta Kala embellishes an array of home decor and lifestyle products, spanning diverse bases. This art form's journey to India wove through different regions, absorbing and reflecting various artistic traditions. Javed Hassan’s craft tells a tale of intricate craftsmanship, an elegant interplay of golden hues, and motifs that whisper stories of a bygone era.

    Usta Kala

Usta Art originated from Iran, flourished in Mughal durbars, and merged with Indian culture. The then-king of Bikaner, Raja Rai Singh, welcomed nawab Usta artists to his domain. Bikaner's Usta artists created a new branch of Usta art. Their descendants brought it to life in the shape of Bikaner's magnificent Junagarh Fort's Anoop palace, Chandra palace, Karan palace, and Phool Mahal. The art is still alive and well, and Usta artisans may be seen performing the trade that their forefathers taught them.
